This comprehensive 16-week program, starting in August, provides the necessary courses to become an instructor guard. Join us in safeguarding our pools and waterways while enjoying the rewarding experience of playing an active role in public safety.
Addressing the National Lifeguard Shortage: The closure of recreation facilities and the cancellation of swimming lessons during the pandemic led to a significant shortage of lifeguards and swim instructors across the country. In response to this critical issue, Winnipeg’s Lifeguard Training Program aims to bolster staffing levels at local pools and aquatic facilities. By offering free certification, the program not only addresses the shortage but also empowers individuals to make a difference in their community.
Ensuring Pool Safety for All: Aquatic facilities play a vital role in teaching water safety and swimming skills, particularly for children. Recent drownings in Manitoba have emphasized the urgency of having well-staffed pools that prioritize safety. Mayor Scott Gillingham highlights the importance of providing a safe environment where families can enjoy facilities without concerns. By participating in this program, you contribute to making a significant impact on pool safety and help alleviate waiting lists for swimming lessons.
Accessibility and Flexibility: The City of Winnipeg is committed to breaking down financial barriers and ensuring that the program is accessible to all aspiring lifeguards. Accepted applicants will receive course materials at no cost. Moreover, the program is open to those who have partially completed the required courses, recognizing the need for flexibility and accommodating individuals who have already begun their lifeguard training journey.
Qualifications and Application: If you have a minimum Grade 10 education and a swim skill level of six (advanced swimmer), you are eligible to apply for this exceptional training opportunity. The Lifeguard Training Program provides a comprehensive curriculum approved by Lifesaving Society Manitoba, equipping you with the necessary skills and knowledge to become a certified lifeguard.
